Moodle Basics: Using a Course Management System

In the first half of the class, find out what this powerful course management system is, how to use it as the one stop website for your class, and how to get your own for free. In the second half of the class, participants will have an opportunity to practice developing their own course. Lots of hands-on time will be provided to create a sample class and organize it. Are you overwhelmed? Do you feel isolated in your role as an educator? Having a PLN (Personal Learning Network) allows you and your students to learn and share with others around the world, 24/7. A PLN is a reciprocal network that you create based on your interests and needs. By developing your own PLN, you generate multiple opportunities to learn from, connect with, gather information and resources, then create and share with people like you. In this class, we will explain how to use an online community to develop your PLN and then share various tools that can help you do so. We will explore online learning communities such as Google Docs and Moodle, and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. With the new Senate Bill 54 in Missouri, these resources have a different role with our students. We will discuss the movement from an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) to a RUP (Responsible Use Policy) for students and teachers. You’ll also collaborate with others teaching in your grade and subject area to design and build lessons. This workshop is for dynamic educators who are enthusiastic about designing lesson activities to increase student engagement and participation. Discover how DE streaming digital media resources can be used with your interactive white boards (IWB). Engage today’s learner by using images, videos, and audio files with your IWB lessons and by creating multimedia projects with your students. Participants will learn how to integrate DE streaming digital media into a variety of applications such as SMART Notebook, Promethean Flipchart, Moodle, Glogster, VoiceThread, Animoto and more. Throughout this class, you will discover ways to develop curriculum-based digital media projects and lessons with DE streaming resources. We will touch on copyright compliance issues, practice finding images and music, create voice-overs using SMART & Promethean IWB recorders, and the free download, Audacity. Skills covered can be applied to any subject area and any grade level.

Free Discovery Education Network (DEN) Saturday Conferences
Teachers and administrators worldwide are invited to learn online and in-person on three Saturdays during the 2011-12 school year. Participants can attend in-person regional events hosted by the Missouri DEN Leadership Council and CSD, or join from home. Thousands of educators from around the world connect for these professional development sessions, networking and sharing. Attend one or all of these free, Discovery Educator Network Virtual Conferences. Each Virtual Conference will feature presentations from DEN gurus and other nationally known speakers. These informative sessions will cover a variety of relevant topics, such as differentiating learning with digital content and integrating new Web 2.0 tools into instruction. Those attending in-person gatherings will participate in the online presentations, as well as breakout sessions presented by local STAR Discovery Educators. The fall and spring DEN Virtual Conferences provide a unique opportunity to learn powerful ways to integrate digital media and Web 2.0 tools into your instruction as well as discover an abundance of resources to expand your own personal learning network. The winter DEN SCIcon is an online conference focused on providing participants with some of the most effective strategies for transforming their Science classes through the meaningful and effective integration of digital media content.

NEW! Distance Learning Academy (FULL)
Distance Learning consists of many technology facets, allowing for a variety of learning opportunities including e-Learning, online projects, and videoconferencing. In this academy, participants will learn and experience methods of blended learning while also participating in projects with other classes. Additional uses of distance learning through point-to-point videoconferencing (VC) and multi-point connections using H.323 systems will be examined. Participants will learn about other collaborative technologies such as Google docs, blogs & wikis. This academy is designed to immerse participants in collaborative projects over distance learning. The value in creating this personal learning network (PLN) is in the networking and connections between the participants and the distance learning experience throughout the academy. This new multi-session academy is an extension of the New Links Distance Learning program. Participants will have the option to earn credit through Lindenwood University at an additional cost of $60 per credit hour.

"Library media specialists empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information." (AASL) This new academy focuses on the changing role of the Library Media Specialist in K-12 education today. Today’s LMS must play the versatile role of an instructional partner responsible for ensuring that students and staff are efficient and effective users of information. The Academy will assist LMS personnel in teaching and connecting the new standards of AASL, ISTE and the NETS. Registration is open for all library media specialists to attend. Participants will have an option to earn 3.0 credits through Lindenwood University for an additional cost of $60 per credit hour.
