Tips for Teachers Participating in Videoconferences

What is Protocol?
Protocol is the consideration of others and applies to both instructors and students. Here are a few tips to make the videoconferencing session run smoothly.

  • Prior to the Session
    Rehearse with the site coordinator (tech. person)
    Make a test call


  • During the Session
    Start the session on time
    Provide large tent name cards for students to prop in front of them
    Provide time for the students to practice
    Ask students to limit excessive side conversations and distracting noises, such as rustling of papers
    Explain logistics and rules for behavior
    Mute your microphones when you are not speaking
    Explain discussion rules and any special signals you may have for students to gain your attention
    Discuss the distribution of material
    Encourage your students to be assertive and to share during the class session
    Be specific about how you would like the discussion to take place


  • After the Session
    Follow up on all questions and give timely and constructive feedback
    Evaluate the program
    Make necessary changes
