The International Education Consortium (IEC) has built its history upon the improvement of teaching through teacher knowledge of both content and pedagogy in the humanities. Since 1986, IEC, working primarily with social studies and language arts teachers, has brought together writers, educators, and scholars to share ideas for integrating new information in teachers’ classrooms. IEC programs have always demonstrated a commitment to reading, writing, talking, listening, and thinking for teachers and students alike.
IEC is a program of the Staff
Development Division of the Cooperating School Districts. School
improvement is a long-term and continuing process, and the programs
of IEC continue to meet the needs of our constituency. The work of
IEC is aligned throughout with the work of the St. Louis Regional
Professional Development Center.

Extending Missouri Humanities
2009-2010, a grant from the Missouri Humanities Council (MHC), will
enable the International Education Consortium to continue into the
future the only professional development programming in Missouri
directly relevant to the history, literature and other humanities
teachers in the school districts served by the CSD. Activities
include: (1) Fiction and History XV, a four session after-school
reading seminar for educators featuring books that challenge them
to expand their reading skills and their background knowledge; (2)
Social Studies Leaders Network and World History Network,
open-ended forums where teachers and educators from across the
region can meet on issues of content and pedagogy of concern in
history classrooms; and (3) weeklong College Board Advanced
Placement Summer Institutes in World History and Human Geography
that are opportunities for teachers to receive the necessary
training locally.
The MHC is the only state-wide agency in Missouri devoted
exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It
has served as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the
Humanities since 1971. For more information about the grants
program of the MHC, call 314-781-9660 or 800-357-0909, or write to
the MHC, 543 Hanley Industrial Court, Suite 205, St. Louis MO
