From Tragedy to Triumph –– The Journey of the Joplin Schools

The Joplin Schools was devastated by an EF-5 tornado on May 22, 2011. In spite of heavy losses, the school district rallied the community to open schools on time 87 days later. This session will provide an overview of some of the current challenges and opportunities faced by the Joplin Schools as it endeavors to turn this terrible tragedy into an amazing opportunity to reinvent public education for its children.

Dr. C.J. Huff, superintendent of Joplin Schools, experiences as a classroom teacher, building principal, superintendent and a family farmer prepared him to lead his district through the recovery effort following the devastating Sunday, May 22, 2011 tornado that ripped through the heart of Joplin destroying or damaging 10 of the 19 buildings including the high school and leaving over half of his students without a school to return to on the following Monday. Huff’s declaration that “We will start school on time” is credited with being a key factor that drew the community of Joplin together just days after the tornado and provided a positive light for the country to rally around in the midst of such tragedy and destruction. On August 17, 2011, Joplin’s 7,700 students started the new school year as scheduled.

Dr. Huff’s recognitions include: People Magazine's “2011 Heroes Among Us”, eSchool News 2012 Tech-Savvy Superintendent Award, Missouri Association of School Administrators 2012 Pearce Award. Listen to Podcast.

Transitioning to Common Core Using Technology with Ferdi Serim

Ferdi Serim, Executive Director of the New Mexico Society for Technology in Education (NMSTE), the Learning Community Technologies Director at Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations and Owner of CLARD Consulting, on how schools can transition to the CCSS and integrate technology tools at the same time. Explore how to use engaging projects to help learners develop 21st century skills by applying the Common Core to real-world challenges and how to use available school performance data to select the most appropriate and engaging projects. Examine strategies for determining readiness entry points for staff, based on their prior experience with project based learning and comfort level with online learning, and how to use job-embedded online professional development to help all staff transition to the Common Core.
