A Milestone Worthy of Celebration 

This year, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) celebrates 50 years of changing lives, challenging unfair systems, and uplifting Deaf communities around the world. 

When we first began in a broom closet at the South Dakota School for the Deaf, we couldn’t have imagined just how far this mission would grow… or that it would still be going strong five decades later. Today, CSD stands as a force for equality, access, and innovation. 

As we reflect on our journey and the challenges we’ve faced, one thing has remained constant: our drive to step up to the plate. Time and again, we’ve met barriers head-on, taken the swing, and knocked it out of the park. From legislative battles to cultural shifts and advances in technology, we took off running to cover the bases and haven’t stopped since. 

From that reflection, a unifying theme emerged to mark our 50^th year and all the years of service up to now: Lift. Open. Grow. 

LIFT: Empowering the Deaf Community Since 1975 

From its grassroots beginnings, CSD has grown into a global movement, lifting millions by breaking down obstacles and creating new possibilities. Whether it’s through employment programs, education access, funding businesses and organizations, community involvement, or policy advocacy, we’ve kept one belief at our core: the Deaf community deserves not just to be included but to take opportunities to lead and be seen in every space. 

OPEN: Building Bridges Through Access and Inclusion 

Opening doors has always meant more than creating opportunities, it means building pathways to fairness and equality. Through ASL-centered technology, communication access services, and uplifting programs, we’ve helped expand understanding and open minds around the world. We don’t just talk about access. We design it, build it, and live it. 

GROW: Planting the Seeds of the Future 

CSD’s vision has always been rooted in short and long-term impact. We invest in the next generation of Deaf entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers, those who will redefine what’s possible for our community. From venture funds and mentorship programs to innovative disaster relief helplines and crisis support, our work grows where it's needed most.
