Leadership Series: Brandi Rarus

CSD board member Brandi Rarus has been involved with CSD in different roles for nearly three decades.

“I’ve been with CSD, in one way or another, for more than 27 years, starting with the Sprint-CSD relay service partnership, to the six years I spent in Sioux Falls working in marketing during the VRS boom, to working as an independent contractor selling services, then back to becoming a CSD employee with business development and public relations,” Brandi said. “I can say with certainty that the last five years have been the most rewarding for me.”

As Vice President of Public Relations, Engagement, and Policy, Brandi led a team in the areas of media relations, brand management, corporate communications, social media, public policy, and community engagement. Although she has moved on to a role as Executive Director of the Office of University Communications at Gallaudet University, Brandi remains on CSD’s board of directors.

“The CSD Leadership team is among the best, most brilliant, and talented people I’ve worked with. Everyone is so skilled in their area of expertise,” Brandi said. “They’re such a passionate and dedicated group of people.”

In this video, Brandi shares how her experiences growing up deaf in a hearing family, and her reign as Miss Deaf America shaped her, and how CSD has evolved with the deaf community over the years.

“We changed our mission focus from ‘communication access’ to changing the perceptions of deaf people and addressing under- and unemployment,” Brandi said. “I’ve seen us redefine ourselves as a social impact organization. It’s been an amazing ride.”
